I have tried a search but can find no "definitive" answer , (not even on their website)
which makes me wonder , as its not the first item I have bought which said its legal when it turns out its wasnt
do we know if these are really legal ?
Brightplate has contacted the agencies listed below involved with number plate legislation and control in the UK and we have made every endeavor to ensure that our product complies with legal requirements.
The plate is constructed from materials currently used in the manufacture of standard number plates.
When the plate is in the ‘off ’ condition it has all the characteristics of standard number plates and conforms to the British Standard for number plates, BS145AUd.
When lit, it does not contravene any regulation as there is no current legislation for the provision of self-illuminating number plates.
Proposals for self-illuminated number plates are being presented to the Economic Commission for Europe ( Inland Transport Committee ). We believe that our product will comply with category 2 of the proposed regulations.
The current regulation ( only for the rear of a vehicle - there is no regulation for the illumination of a front plate ) states that the rear number plate aperture be lit with a white light that does not emit light to the rear of the vehicle. VOSA confirms that MOT testing stations are already aware of the existence of internally illuminated number plates and that the only requirement is that the rear plate is lit - the MOT regulations do not specify ‘how’ it should be lit.
Anyone concerned about the legality of the plates, or is told that the plates are illegal by one or more of the agencies listed should, in the first instance, contact Brightplate
